Justice in Pakistan

Law’s essential is to provide means to resolve the disputes according to the rules of justice and equality and to run the society smoothly and to maintain its balance. It is aimed for the satisfaction of the victims in terms to take revenge, to warn and discourage others to commit a crime and to punish the guilty and wrongdoer in order to reduce crime and to promote public safety. According to law, every individual has the right to be treated at equal level. Pakistan is Islamic republic and its law is based on the constitution and Islamic law (Sharia). In Pakistan, despite of the legal judicial system people often resort to informal justice system “Jirga” and “Panchayat”. Jirga is a Pashtoon and tribal tradition while Panchayat system is practiced mostly in Punjab. Both are informal and traditional systems of justice for the local community to sort out the disputes. Both of the systems are not recognized and legalized by the state.
